"Mercy" Killing?

1. Reflecting on Of Mice and Men a. Explain George's perspective for what he did to Lennie

George didn't want Lennie to suffer if Curley ever caught up to him. He also didn't want Lennie to be in jail because then he would just stay in there and be really sad. George just wanted to do it a way that would be easy and simple a way that Lennie wouldn't be suffer.

b. Do you think that was the best thing to do for Lennie?

I am sort of in the middle because he killed Curley's wife and yes he didn't do anything wrong but he should have thought what he was doing. Then again that wasn't the best thing to do because he would could of ran away and George would have probably caught up to Lennie. Though I would probably say that it was a good thing to do because if Curley would have ever found him he would have given hell to Lennie like torturing him and in the end killing him.

2. Father in Italy Accused of Murder a. Using a "quote" to support your response, explain the father's reasons for what he did.

''Late last year, 67-year-old Beppino Englaro, won an intense 10-year legal battle to allow his daughter's feeding tubes to be removed, saying that was her wish.''

I belive he did this because that would be the best thing for his daughter. He doesn't want to keep seeing his daughter lay in bed looking like she is dead already. He wants her to be happy he doesn't want her to lay in the hospital bed and that would be what she really wanted to be done with her.

b. Using a "quote" to support your response, explain if that was the best thing to do for the daughter.

''The court accepted that before the accident, his daughter had expressed a preference for dying over being kept alive artificially.''

I do belive that it was the best thing for the people to do because 1. the court gave him permition to be able to remove the feading tube and 2. they said that Eluana was better to die then to be kept alive threw a feeding tube. I also think it was the best thing for her because probably she wasn't even alive any more or maybe she was but if you took the tubes off then she would die, but if she could be able to breath or something then it would be okay. Another reason is because she should have all the right to choose if she wants to live or die.

c. Do you agree or disagree with what the father did? Why?

I agree with what the father did because he has all the right and he even won in court so the people could take the feeding tubes off. Also because what parent wants to see their child to be seen as if they are dead. Another reason is because probebly the girl did want to die that way especialy because her father was there.

3. Man Kills Family after Losing his Job a. Imagine and list things that might have been going through the father's mind as he contemplated his "mercy" killing. (In the article, the father's suicide note gives specific evidence of why he did what he did. Elaborate on it.) Specifically, what could he have been negative or paranoid about?

  • frustration
  • worried
  • depressed
  • anxious
  • mad
  • sadness
  • problems

He was really paranoid because both of the parents had lost their jobs. Also because they wanted their jobs because they neeeded to feed their children. Another reason would be that the family didn't have any other place to go so they decided to kill themselves.

b. Unfortunately, with America's failing economy, many professionals are losing their jobs. While many do not resort to something as extreme as the man in the article, it does cause stress within families. What are some ways that parents can support children (to succeed in life) that do NOT require money?

Some ways that a parent can support their child is by letting your child know that you will always be with them. Parents don't have to give their child everything they want, but what a child does want to know is that they want to see their parents happy thery don't want to see them all stressed out. The most improtant thing you always have to give a child is love and they have to know that you will always love them.
